Conservation project-Embroidery Transfer

This project was undertaken in the RSN studio as part of our conservation training. We were given a selection of damaged crewel work embroideries given to the collection to choose from. We were asked to transfer the embroidery onto a new piece of fabric using different conservation techniques for transfer while keeping all work in keeping with the original design.

For this piece I have used a mix of couching outlines and also extending the embroidered stitching with new thread (extending the long and short) in keeping with the original design.

The new fabric is then mounted within a fabric covered frame so that the back of the work can be seen revealing the conservation techniques which have taken place.
